5 Ways To Stay Focused On Your Goals
Let’s face it, if you’re reading this post, then chances are you are looking for a better way. It’s easy to sit around and ponder what your goals in life or career might be. It’s another thing to actually move forward and do the work. It’s even more challenging yet to see it the work through to the end. Speaking from personal experience, a fire needs to be lit inside of you in order to truly stay on task. I spent years pondering my goals and truly wanting to achieve them, but just didn’t have the “fire in my belly” that I needed to go out there and do it.
There is no denying it, our world has become quite a harsh place in recent years. I’ve seen it firsthand while at work, at the supermarket, and everywhere else in between. This type of attitude can do two things to you: It can motivate you to get your own life going and it can beat you down. Frankly, it has and continue to do both to me. The only difference is, I am not letting the “life beating me down” win over my desire to create a better life for myself. I don’t think you or anybody else should allow life to keep you from accomplishing your goals. That’s why I took the time to write a list of 5 things that help to keep me focused on my own goals. It has helped me to go from having no followers on social media and no connections in the blogging community to making tons of new friends and giving myself some much needed exposure. If you can find it within yourself to stay focused on your goals, you can achieve greater things than a 9-5 corporate job. This is how I am doing it:
1. Write Your Goals Down
I’ll be honest, I’m not huge on writing stuff down. I’m trying to get better at it, but still depend largely on my memory (it’s still very good, but not quite as good as it used to be!). When I find that I have a little extra motivation or truly want to seek to make some changes in my career, I start by writing my goals down. I usually do this via my phone’s notepad. If nothing else, it will get you in the right mindset and could help you to stay organized. Just by simply prioritizing your goals, you can get yourself into the right mindset about the next steps in your career.
2. Don’t Let Negativity Affect You
This is a tough point to master. Especially for a guy like me who wears his heart on his sleeve. When things are going great, I’m the most cheerful guy you will meet. When things are going bad, I try to remain positive through the challenges. However, when toxic, negative feedback starts to creep in from those who are already carrying a lot of that around, it becomes super challenging. Especially for somebody like me. So how do you overcome that? If you’re feeling pretty frustrated or upset, just walk away from the situation for a few minutes. Take a walk and work that energy off. It might not resolve the situation, but it will help you to get your thoughts together. No matter what, try to remember all of the good things that have happened. Stay focused on the positivity, listen to the positive feedback you receive from those who care about you, and then move on and keep being the awesome person you are.
3. Stay True To Your Vision
It’s good to be inspired by others, but don’t let that distract you from your own goals. We all progress at different rates. Some of us will find success faster than others. Don’t let that discourage you and don’t allow jealousy to rear its ugly head. Know what your goals are and stay true to yourself. Speak from your own voice, not somebody else’s. In the long run, staying true to yourself will actually benefit you. Be inspired, but don’t plagiarize or doubt yourself.
4. Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself
When you’re working insanely hard at blogging, social media, and everything you have to manage in your own life, it can get very exhausting. Burn out can happen when you least expect it. It could be happening and you don’t even realize it until after you’ve been going through it for awhile. If you’re not getting the amount of views that you want on your blog or don’t have the amount of followers you want on social media, don’t worry about it. These things don’t happen overnight. Anybody who says it does is probably either very experienced already or they’re lying. Building up a blog and social media accounts takes a lot of time and hard work. It doesn’t happen overnight. Stay true to your goals and don’t be too hard on yourself. This is a marathon, not a sprint!
5. Don’t Spend Too Much Time Procrastinating
Procrastinating won’t help you to achieve your goals any sooner. Don’t put off what you want to do in life until tomorrow. Life is pretty short. It may seem long sometimes, but it actually isn’t. The years go by faster as time goes on. If you’re dreaming about it and you can see yourself doing it, then rise up and start doing it today. Believe me, if I had stuck to blogging when I started 8 years ago I might be in a completely different place in life today. While I don’t allow that regret to rule my life or mindset, I can honestly say that I regret not sticking with it. I was still in the mindset that I could find the type of career fulfillment I was after in Corporate America. Personally, I think that dream has more or less passed me by. To be honest, I’m not sure if I was ever destined to reach that plateau within that environment. However, I have gained enough wisdom today to realize that all of that isn’t for me. The time to put my true core goals to the side has come to an end. If you’re feeling remotely the same way that I have over the past 8-10 years, then today is the right day to start working on creating your own success!
I would be the first to admit that maintaining the right mindset day in and day out is hard. All kinds of things can happen in our lives that can affect our mood and distract us from reaching our goals. However, I think the key to achieving goals is to make sure you have the presence of mind to reel yourself back in when you get off track. Personally, this mindset has helped me to stay on track with my own goals over the year. These tips should help to give you the framework you need in order to start achieving the type of success you want to have in life. The key is to remember you’re only human, but also know that you are much better than you might think you are. We are all capable of doing great things when we put our minds down to it. Sometimes we just need some words of wisdom in order to get us to that next level.
